Water Quality Evaluation of Domestic Wells in Surman, Northwestern Libya

Abstract


This study was conducted to assess the quality of drinking water collected from various wells located in Surman suburb, northwestern Libya. Samples were collected, and then analyzed for various physico-chemical parameters including acidity (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), total hardness (TH) and total dissolved solids (TDS). Results showed that the values of pH were within the permissible limits given by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Libyan Standards for drinking water. However, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and total hardness were found to exceed the maximum allowable limits indicating the poor quality of these water samples.This shows that the groundwater of this area is unsuitable for human consumption without a prior treatment to bring down these high physico-chemical parameters.
